Dr. Michael Giorlando
Athletic Director/Men's Basketball Coach

Dr. Michael F. Giorlando begins his sixth year as head men’s basketball coach and director of intercollegiate athletics and wellness at Loyola University New Orleans. In his position, Giorlando oversees all aspects of Loyola’s Intercollegiate Athletic and Wellness programs.

The 2008-09 Wolfpack squad finished with the most wins in 50 years with a record of 19-11.  The team also had a program best 12 wins in conference.

Since coming to Loyola, Giorlando has instituted the annual Loyola Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony, which recognizes the student-athletes that have maintained a 3.0 or greater GPA. In 2006-07 and 2007-08, every Loyola team earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA, and in 2008-09, seven out of ten teams accomplished the feat.  Loyola also had 12 student athletes named the NAIA Scholar Athlete list in the 08-09 school year.

Also under his guidance, the department has seen an increase in revenue of development programs for the athletic teams. This, along with the academic accomplishments of the Loyola athletes, did not go unnoticed, as Giorlando was named GCAC Athletic Director of the Year in 2009 for the second time in his career.

Giorlando led the Loyola athletic department through its Hurricane Katrina recovery program. Immediately following the storm, Giorlando moved the operations of the department to Baton Rouge, where he and his staff were graciously hosted by the LSU athletic department. The department arrived back on Loyola’s campus in late November and returned to their offices in early January. In the Spring of 2006, Giorlando was named NAIA Region XIII and GCAC Athletic Director of the Year.

Giorlando has more than 20 years of experience in both the Division I collegiate and high school levels. He was most recently assistant coach/director of basketball operations at Louisiana State University. During his tenure, the LSU men’s team appeared in three post- season tournaments. The Tigers qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and the NIT in 2002 and 2004. In 2003, LSU defeated three top 10 teams including number one ranked Arizona. In his first season, the team was 19-15, subsequent records were 21-11 and 18-11. As assistant coach at LSU, Giorlando facilitated player development, planned game strategy, and developed motivational techniques. He also oversaw the John Brady summer basketball camps.  In his administrative capacities, he prepared, implemented, and balanced the men’s basketball budget of $2,000,000. He also coordinated all travel arrangements, ensured equipment needs and planned practice schedules during the regular season and off season.

Giorlando served as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans (1991-1992, 1997-2001) for five years, including one season under former Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Hornets coach Tim Floyd.  At the high school level, Giorlando served as head coach at Archbishop Hannan High School (1995-97), Archbishop Shaw High School (1993-95), and St. Martin’s Episcopal School (1992-93).

Giorlando was a practicing dentist for seven years and spent eight years on the teaching faculty at LSU School of Dentistry before turning to coaching. A graduate of Jesuit High School, he has a bachelor of science degree in biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile, a doctor of dental surgery from LSU School of Dentistry, and a master’s in education from UNO.

Giorlando and his wife Judy have two sons, Andrew, 17, and Michael J.,13.
