Dr. Michael Giorlando
Athletic Director/Men's Basketball Coach
Dr. Michael F. Giorlando begins his fourth year as head men’s basketball coach and director of intercollegiate athletics and wellness at Loyola University New Orleans.
In his position, Giorlando will oversee all aspects of Loyola’s Intercollegiate Athletic and Wellness programs.
Since coming to Loyola, Giorlando has instituted the annual Loyola Scholar Athlete Awards Ceremony, which recognizes the student-athletes that have maintained a 3.0 or greater GPA. In 2006-07, every Loyola team earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA. This accomplishment did not go unnoticed. Each team was honored as a Scholar Team by the NAIA.
Also under his guidance, the department has seen an increase in revenue of development programs for the athletic teams.
Giorlando contiues to lead the Loyola athletic department through its Hurricane Katrina recovery program. Immediately following the storm, Giorlando moved the operations of the department to Baton Rouge, where he and his staff were graciousy hosted by the Louisiana State University athletic department. The department arrived back on Loyola’s campus in late November and returned to their offices in early January.
In the Spring of 2006, Giorlando was named NAIA Region XIII and GCAC Athletic Director of the Year in recognition for getting the deparment back after the storm.
Giorlando has more than 15 years of experience in both the Division I collegiate and high school levels. He was most recently assistant coach/director of basketball operations at LSU.
During his tenure, the LSU men’s team appeared in three post- season tournaments. The Tigers qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2003 and the NIT in 2002 and 2004.
In 2003, LSU defeated three top 10 teams including number one ranked Arizona. In his first season, the team was 19-15, subsequent records were 21-11 and 18-11.
As assistant coach at LSU, Giorlando facilitated player development, planned game strategy, and developed motivational techniques. He also oversaw the John Brady summer basketball camps.
In his administrative capacities, he prepared, implemented, and balanced the men’s basketball budget of $2,000,000. He also coordinated all travel arrangements, ensured equipment needs and planned practice schedules during the regular season and off season.
Giorlando served as an assistant coach at the University of New Orleans (1991-1992, 1997-2001) for five years, including one season under former Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Hornets coach Tim Floyd.
At the high school level, Giorlando served as head coach at Archbishop Hannan High School (1995-97), Archbishop Shaw High School (1993-95), and St. Martin’s Episcopal School (1992-93).
Giorlando was a practicing dentist for seven years and spent eight years on the teaching faculty at LSU School of Dentistry before turning to coaching. A graduate of Jesuit High School, he has a bachelor of science degree in biology from Spring Hill College in Mobile, a doctor of dental surgery from LSU School of Dentistry, and a master’s in education from UNO.
Giorlando and his wife Judy have two sons, Andrew, 15, and Michael J.,11.
Joey Stiebing
Assistant Coach

Joey Stiebing begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Wolfpack. He brings a wealth of experience from the NCAA and International levels to Loyola.
Stiebing led UNO from 1997-2001. In his four seasons with the Privateers, he amassed a 57-58 record.
In 2001, he was named Sun Belt Conference coach of the year as the Privateers finished with a 17-12 mark.
Prior to being named head coach, Stiebing was an assistant on the Lakefront from 1990-97, serving under Tim Floyd and Tic Price. Giorlando and Stiebing served together on the same staff at UNO in 1991-92 and 1997-2001.
“I am excited to have Joey join our staff. He has tremendous experience at the college and international levels. He brings a wealth of recruiting contacts that will assist us as we continue to grow our program,” stated Giorlando.
After UNO, Stiebing was the head coach for the Qatar national team from 2003-07. He led the squad to a third place finish at the Asian Championships in 2005 and an appearance at the World Basketball Championships in 2006. He ended his stint in Qatar with a second place finish in the 2006 Asian Games.
Stiebing graduated from LSU in 1985 with a degree in education. While in Baton Rouge, he served as a student manager to Dale Brown’s Tigers from 1982-84. Stiebing earned a master’s degree from UNO in 1997.
Matt Couvillion
Assistant Coach

Matt Couvillion begins his first season as an assistant coach for the Wolfpack men’s basketball team.
Couvillion served as a student manager for LSU’s women’s basketball team from 2004-07. During his time there, he assisted coaches in the organization and setup of practice, clock management, equipment management and also interacted with the booster club. While there, the Lady Tiger basketball team made it to three straight Final Fours.
He also has experience coaching in the YMCA’s youth basketball program in Baton Rouge.
Couvillion also worked with the Big Buddy Program of Baton Rouge. He coordinated both flag football and basketball schedules for inner city youth teams. He also coached both football and basketball for a team in the program.
Couvillion, a native of Plaucheville, La., graduated this past May with a degree in Kinesiology with a concentration in health and physical education.
