(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans cross country and track and field had 10 student athletes named to the College Sports Information Directors of America Capital One Academic All-District Team. The women’s team was represented by Sarah Tortorich, Jacquelyn Gross, Jessica Williams, Denise Powell, and Harley Augustine. The men were represented by Galen Westerfield, Michael Corso, Paul Freese, William Maye, and Kenny Tsao.
Sarah Torotorich will add this honor to the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete and SSAC All-Academic track teams she was named to earlier in the offseason. The New Orleans native graduated this spring with a degree in Visual Arts. She departs Loyola as the school’s record holder in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m races for outdoor track as well as the 60m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m, and 4x400m races for indoor track. She was named SSAC All-Conference for her performance in the 100m, 200m, and 4x400m races this season.
Jacquelyn Gross worked exclusively as a javelin thrower this season, setting a personal best of 82-10 at the South Alabama Invitational. The sophomore from Madisonville, Louisiana is studying finance and accounting at Loyola. Gross was also named to the SSAC All-Academic track team this season.
Jessica Williams earns the Capital One Academic All-District honor after having also earned SSAC All-Academic track team honors as a Psychology/Pre-Med major. The sophomore from Duxbury, Massachusetts ran her best 5K cross country time of 22:31 at the SSAC Championship meet
Sophomore Denise Powell joins the team after a standout track season which saw her break the school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.83. The Biology/Pre-Med major also helped break the school records in the 4x400, 4x800, and distance medley (indoor) during the year. Powell ,a native of Pearl, Mississippi, earned SSAC All-Conference recognition in the 1500m, 4x400m, and 4x800m races. Powell also made the SSAC All-Academic team for both track and cross country.
Harley Augustine joins the group as a biology major from New Orleans. The sophomore participated in a multitude of events while setting school records as a member of the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. She set personal bests in the 200m, 400m hurdles, high jump, shot put, javelin, and long jump this season. Augustine earned SSAC All-Conference honors as a member of the 4x100m team as well as being named to the SSAC All-Academic track team.
Galen Westerfield earned CoSida Capital One Academic All-District honors after graduating this spring with a degree in English. The Milpitas, California native ran for the cross country team this year running a time of 19:58 at the 5K Wolf Pack Invitational. His best time in the 8K was a 29:41 time at the Sand Shark Invitational. Westerfield was named to the cross country SSAC All-Academic team.
Sophomore Michael Corso adds to his academic trophy case after previously being named to the SSAC All-Academic teams for both track and cross country. The biology major from Youngstown, Ohio set school records for the 3000m and distance medley during the indoor season.
Paul Freese posted the fifth fastest 5K in school history when he ran a 26:37 at the Sand Shark Invitational. The Metairie, Louisiana native also set the school record for the 5000m during the outdoor track season. He also took down the school record for the mile during the indoor season. The sophomore history major was named to the SSAC All-Academic team for both cross country and track.
William Maye, a member of the record setting 4x400m relay team for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, is studying economics. The sophomore from Andover, Massachusetts was also a SSAC All-Academic team member.
Kenny Tsao earns the CoSida Capital One Academic All-District honors after graduating this spring with a degree in music education. The Silver Springs, Maryland native set a personal best 8K cross country time at the Sand Shark Invitational when he finished in 28:48. Tsao earned SSAC All-Academic cross country team honors this season.
