NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s basketball teams travel across town Monday to meet with the Dillard Bleu Devils inside Dent Hall.
The 2-0 women’s team continues its road stretch at 5:00 p.m. vs. the 0-1 Bleu Devils. Both squads are coming off losses.
The ‘Pack was edged by Tulane in an exhibition matchup 49-74 on Friday while Dillard was downed by SUNO 47-68. Loyola squares off with the Bleu Devils for the 34th time.
LU sports a 14-19 record against its cross-town foe coming into tomorrow’s game. However, the ‘Pack has won the past 10 meetings, and coach Kellie Kennedy holds a perfect record over the Bleu Devils.
The Loyola women’s basketball team opened its regular season with an 85-55 win to St. Thomas University (Houston). Senior Keiva Council led the ‘Pack with her first double-double scoring 21 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Jasmine Brewer also posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
In their second game against Florida Memorial, it would once again be Keiva Council leading the way with 21 points, while Brewer had 18.
The Dillard women’s basketball team is coming off a loss at SUNO. Ariel Mitchell and Lauren Daniel led the Bleu Devils in scoring with 11 points each.
Following the match, the 2-0 men’s team takes on a 0-3 Dillard squad, with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
The ‘Pack is coming off of an 82-68 victory over St. Thomas from Florida this past Thursday evening. Loyola looks to keep their offense rolling, scoring 85 and 82 points in their first two games.
Robert Lovaglio is off to a great start in this young season, leading the Wolfpack in the three major offensive categories. The sophomore is averaging 20.5 points per game, 11 rebounds per game, and 3 assists per game. Lovaglio is shooting 47.8% from the field.
Historically, Loyola has struggled against Dillard, posting a 7-27 overall record. However, under head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando, the ‘Pack is 6-5 against the Bleu Devils, including a current 6-1 run over the past five years.
Last season, the Wolfpack travelled to Dillard and won 88-74. Corey Gray powered the offense in that game, in which he scored 19 points and shot 63.6% from the field.
Monday’s contest marks Dillard’s first home game of the season, after starting 0-3 on the road. The Bleu Devils return home after a 48-67 loss to Southern University-Baton Rouge.
Dillard currently has three players averaging double digit points. Sophomore forward Cameron Hill averages 14.33 ppg and junior guard Lance Theard averages 11.75 ppg. Finally, sophomore guard Jamal Silas, a former Wolfpack player who transferred this season to Dillard, averages 11.5 ppg.
