(New Orleans, La.) Cassidy Eymard came off the bench to spark the Loyola University New Orleans women’s basketball team to an 81-53 victory over Southern Wesleyan University Saturday evening in The Den. The freshman set career highs with 20 points and 10 rebounds in only 19 minutes of action.
The Wolf Pack fell behind 6-17 in the first 5:12 of the game. Lauren Johnson hit three triples in the first three minutes to help Southern Wesleyan sprint out to the early lead. Johnson finished the contest with 21 points to lead the Lady Warriors. However, the Wolf Pack fought back closing the first half on a 27-7 run. In the process, turning their 11 point deficit into an 11 point halftime lead.
The Lady Warriors opened the second half on a 10-2 run which prompted a Loyola timeout. The game of runs continued as Loyola came out of that timeout with a 21-8 spurt that put the game out of reach for the Lady Warriors.
Eymard’s first career double-double led a very balanced team effort which saw four players score in double figures. Rebekah Greer had 18, Megen Berner had 15, and Jasmine Brewer added 14 for the Wolf Pack. The team shot 56% for the game and 43% from the three point line to help the Wolf Pack on their way to victory.
Eymard entered the game with career highs of six points and six rebounds, both coming against St. Thomas-Houston on November 24.
The Loyola (5-8, 3-3) defense was also superb, holding Southern Wesleyan (5-8, 0-5) to only 32% shooting for the game. Ashley Cooper was the only other Lady Warrior to join Johnson in double figures; she scored 13 and pulled down a team high eight rebounds.
The Wolf Pack returns to the court on Monday, January 7th against Tulane in the Battle of Freret Street. The exhibition contest will be at the Devlin Field House on the Tulane campus at 5:30 p.m. The University community is invited to attend a pre-game tailgate party on the Loyola campus starting at 3:30 p.m.
