NEW IBERIA, La. – Pitchers Carl Labit Jr. and Jeffery Castille combined for 11 innings and one earned run as the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team won a pair of games against LSU-Alexandria, 9-1 and 10-0.
Evan Turkish led the Wolfpack (15-30, 5-7 SSAC) offense with four hits and three runs scored on the afternoon, while Brandon Snow and Ryan Scott each had three runs batted in. Scott also hit his second home run of the season to help put away the Generals (10-29) in game two. Cullen Vujnovich had the lone RBI of the day for LSUA.
Three four-run innings and a five-run frame provided most of the scoring for the ‘Pack for the two games. LU started the first game with a four-run second. The first five batters in the inning reached base, putting the Wolfpack on the board. Two runs crossed the plate off of LSUA errors, while two came in off of sacrifice flies. Taylor Domengeaux hit another sac fly in the fourth to give LU a five-run cushion.
After the Generals scored their lone run of the game in the sixth, the ‘Pack responded with another four-run performance in the bottom half of the inning. Domengeaux and Slade Sanders each hit RBI singles, and Scott hit a two-run double to deep center field to cap the scoring.
Labit (4-2) earned the win, giving up one run over six innings while allowing just six baserunners. Devin Evans (4-3) gave up five runs (four earned) over five innings in the losing effort. Evans allowed four hits and six walks. Logan Peterson retired the side in one inning of relief for the Wolfpack.
In the nightcap, LU went ahead early with a four-run bottom of the first. Turkish and Tyler Duplantis each hit one-out RBI singles. Greg Bellelo then drove in Turkish and Duplantis with a double with two away in the inning.
The lead increased to nine in the third inning. Four hits and three General errors in the inning helped to account for the offensive attack. Scott and Duplantis scored on errors, Snow hit a sac fly, and Philip Cazayoux hit a two-run double to close out the scoring in the inning. Scott ended the game in the sixth with a solo blast to right field, bringing into effect the ten-run rule and giving Loyola the 10-0 victory.
Castille (2-2) pitched five strong innings, allowing four hits and no walks while striking out four Generals. New Iberia nativeMitch Dartez (0-1) took the loss after spotting LU nine runs (six earned) over three innings.
