BATON ROUGE, La. – Senior guard Keiva Council of Loyola University New Orleans continues to tear through the competition as she racks up her third honor of the week being named LSWA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, Wednesday, Jan. 10. Earlier in the week, she also earned SSAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and the NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. This is Council’s sixth honor on the season and the third from the Louisiana Sports Writer’s Association for the Wolfpack this season.
The 5-8 guard from Houston, Texas, had one of her best weeks to date dropping 25 points at Brewton-Parker last Friday and 41 points at Southern Poly last Saturday. Council is the only player in the program’s history to score 40+ points more than once in a season. She also scored her 1500th point against the Lady Hornets last weekend. Council also added 15 rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block to her weekend resume.
Council ranks nationally in the top 50 in the NAIA in an astounding seven categories: 1st in points per game (24.2), 3rd in total scoring (339), 19th in defensive rebounds per game (6.2), 35th in field goal percentage (47.5), 36th in three-point field goals made per game (2.1), 47th in total three-point field goals made (29), and 50th in free throw percentage (76.5).
Council, and the rest of the Wolfpack, will take on Spring Hill Thursday evening in The DEN at 5:30 p.m. CT. The game is part of the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project which is a nationwide effort to identify basketball games between Jesuit schools and, through those games, bring a greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) developed this project in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other.
