HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Keiva Council scored 28 points, thanks in part to 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line, but Loyola University New Orleans (13-7, 2-2 SSAC) fell just short, losing in a double-overtime thriller to William Carey, 89-86.
The game was back-and-forth throughout the first half, with neither team leading by more than five points at any time. The Wolfpack took its biggest lead of the half, as Council hit a three-pointed with 7:44 to play in the half, and LU went up 23-19.
Council hit another clutch shot just before halftime to send the ‘Pack into the locker room down 35-33.
WCU (6-11, 2-3 SSAC) started the second half on a big run, pushing its lead to 10 points off of a TeAnna Carter jumper with 15:33 to play in regulation.
Loyola would respond, though, with a 13-1 run to take the lead, highlighted by seven points by freshman guard Jasmine Brewer and three-pointers by Council and sophomore guard Jackie Padilla.
The Crusaders would go on to lead for most of the remainder of the half, until, down by four with 35 seconds to go, Brewer hit a free throw, followed by a Padilla three-pointer that tied the game. A late defensive stand resulted in a missed three-point attempt by the Crusaders, and the game proceeded to overtime.
WCU started the first overtime period on a 5-0 run. The ‘Pack came back from a late hole yet again, though, as Padilla and Council each hit clutch three-pointers, and Brewer made two key free throws, pushing the game to another overtime.
The second OT remained tight throughout, with each team trading baskets and free throws. With the game tied with 52 seconds remaining, WCU’s Crystal Tucker drained a jumper, and two Megan Reynolds free throws iced the game.
Brewer finished the game with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Padilla had 14 and shot 4-for-7 from three-point range. Amy Moody rounded out the list of Wolfpack players in double figures, as she finished with 10.
The ‘Pack will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 29 in Montgomery, Ala. as they take on Auburn-Montgomery. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
