NEW ORLEANS, La. – Keiva Council had a career game against Dillard on Tuesday, setting career highs in points and rebounds and a school record in points as the Wolfpack (16-8) defeated the Bleu Devils (10-14) in overtime.
Council bested her career high in points by 12, netting 43 points on the game. The previous school record was 39 points, scored by Trenese Smith. Council also grabbed 14 rebounds, beating her previous career high of 12. Council shot 11-for-22 from the field, including 5-for-8 from three-point range, while she made 16 of her 22 free throw attempts.
The Wolfpack started the game off strong, taking an early 5-0 lead, off of two Council field goals. The Bleu Devils fought back to knot the score up at 7-7 with 14:54 to go in the first.
After a series of back-and-forth buckets that tied the score up at 17, Dillard went on a 13-point run over the next six and a half minutes. From there, the two teams went back and forth again until the break, with DU taking a 36-22 lead into halftime.
When play resumed, the ‘Pack immediately began chipping away at the Bleu Devils’ lead. Council and Jackie Padilla each scored a pair of buckets to bring the score to 43-34 Dillard. Three minutes later, Dillard brought the game back to double-digits, going up 54-43 off of a Lauren Daniel basket.
The Wolfpack finished the second half on a 22-11 run to send the game into overtime. Jasmine Brewer hit a pair of free throws to bring the game within five points. Council hit a three to cut the Bleu Devils’ lead to two, and two Council free throws tied the game up with 65. The teams each hit one free throw in the final seconds to keep the game tied.
In overtime, Amy Moody hit a three-pointer with 2:56 to play to give LU its first lead since early in the first half. Council hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final 2:16 to seal the win for Loyola.
The ‘Pack’s next outing is Saturday, Feb. 12 at Dillard. Game time is set for 2 p.m. in Birmingham.
