NEW ORLEANS, La. – This Saturday, the Loyola University New Orleans cross country team face their biggest test of the season. The Wolfpack will head to Rome, Georgia to race in the Southeast Classic.
Berry College will play host to 39 men’s teams and 41 women’s teams this weekend. The Loyola men will be competing in their third consecutive 8K race of the season, kicking off the day at 9 a.m. EST. The women will once again be striving to better their 5K times, following the men at 10 a.m. EST.
“This week we backed off quite a bit on the training,” explains head coach Andy Canegitta. “I want the team to be fresh and ready to go for the tough weekend ahead.”
The Southeast Classic will provide the Wolfpack a chance to evaluate the competition for the SSAC Conference Championship meet on November 5. For the first time this season, the ‘Pack will compete against their rival SSAC opponents who plan on contending for first place in two weeks. Auburn-Montgomery, Emmanuel, Lee, Shorter, Truett-McConnell, and Southern Wesleyan will all be competing and are among the best in the SSAC to date.
“This weekend we’ll be able to assess where we’re at within our conference with the top half of the SSAC running in this event,” continues Canegitta. “If we can finish in the top three amongst SSAC schools this Saturday, we should be primed and ready to contend at the Conference Championship.”
