NEW ORLEANS, La. – This Saturday morning, the Loyola University New Orleans cross country team will clash with all of their conference opponents, as the Wolfpack look to claim their first SSAC Conference Championship.
This will be the men’s and women’s teams second attempt for the conference title under head coach Andy Canegitta, who likes what his teams have accomplished thus far.
“The season has gone great so far, with both programs placing in the top 5 in the majority of the meets this year,” said Canegitta. “This incoming class has added depth to the team, which ultimately fosters better training groups.”
The SSAC Conference Championship Meet begins at 8 a.m. in Clinton, Mississippi. Canegitta and company are counting on this season’s experience to lead them to victory, as this will mark the third meet the Wolfpack will have at the Choctaw Trails.
On the men’s side, only the top team will advance to nationals in Vancouver, Washington on November 19. Outside of the first place team, the top five individual runners will also advance.
Last year’s men’s team finished in sixth place at the conference meet, but Canegitta visualizes a better finish this weekend.
“I’m looking for the men’s side to finish in the top three,” continues Canegitta. “Hopefully get a couple guys to qualify for nationals individually.”
Unlike the men, the top two women’s teams will advance to nationals, with the top seven individuals outside those teams moving onto Vancouver as well. Last season, the Loyola women finished in fifth place, but look poised to contend for the top prize.
“On the women’s side, we’re definitely looking at claiming the title and making it to nationals,” concludes Canegitta.
