Cross Country Ready for Home Opener

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University men’s and women’s cross country teams kick off their first and only home meet of the season this Saturday at Lafreniere Park, as they compete in the Four Points by Sheraton Wolfpack Invitational. Head Coach Andy Canegitta is hoping to build upon the success they’ve had in recent years at their popular home event.

“The women’s team has won this meet the past two years and the men are inching closer and closer every year,” explained Canegitta.

Last year at the Wolfpack Invitational, returning runners Vanessa Righeimer claimed third and Jenna Knoblach took sixth. Now, the Loyola women are coming off a strong second place debut at the Choctaw Season Opener, where they claimed five of the top-30 spots in the competition.

Last season, veteran runners Kenny Tsao and Abraham Thacker claimed fifth and seventh place respectively at the Wolfpack Invitational, as the team finished in third place. The men’s team returns from a fourth place finish from a week ago, where three freshmen achieved top-25 finishes.

“I’m really looking forward to the meet this week. The men and women did well at Choctaw and are ready to race again and improve on last week’s performance,” Canegitta continued.

Joining the Wolfpack on the course Saturday will be Belhaven, Dillard, Millsaps College, Mississippi College, University of New Orleans, William Carey, Xavier, and the Loyola Alumni team. Furthermore, 21 high schools will also be competing as they battle for the varsity trophy.

The women jump start the competition at 8 a.m., while the men follow right behind them at 8:35 a.m., both running a 5K. Then the high school athletes take over when the varsity girls start at 9 a.m., followed by the varsity boys running at 9:35 a.m. Both the JV girls and boys are running 2 mile meets with the girls at 10 a.m. and the boys at 10:20 a.m. Last but not least, at 10:45 a.m. the combined boys and girls middle school 2 mile race begins. The awards ceremony will start promptly around 11 a.m.
