New Orleans, La.- The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s tennis teams opened the fall season in the first day of the Big Easy Classic at the UNO Tennis Center on Friday.
On the men’s singles side, Devon Belcher had a solid showing against one of the top seeds Daniel Leitner from the University of South Alabama, falling 6-4, 6-1. Belcher will play the winner of Roy Knight (Nicholls State) and Nikita Soifer (Xavier) in a consolation match on Saturday. Matthew Farnham fell to Daniel Populus of UNO 6-2, 6-3 and Sabastian Kirmse of South Alabama 6-0, 6-1 in a consolation match. Josh Laviolette, who fell to Bhavratan Singh, will play the winner of Vitali Vasileuski of Alcorn State and Gullermo Aylon of UNO on Saturday. Tony Benjamin fell to Dominik Kardell 6-1, 6-0 and will face Jan Hellmich of South Alabama.
On the women’s side, Kanda Borgononi defeated Jordyn Goody of Xavier 6-2, 7-5. She fell to Merilin Tipp of Alcorn State in three sets in the next round. Meghen Debaroncilli fell in her opening round match to Klaudia Gawlik and will play in Saturday’s consolation flight. Debaroncilli and Frances Bonnin dropped their double match to UNO’s Sanchez/Svensson 8-6.
“Today was a good first day to the fall season for us,” said Loyola head coach Zubin Engineer. “I thought Devon played well in a match against one of the top seeds in the tournament. Kanda had a great win against a formidable opponent from Xavier and had a great showing against a division one opponent in her second match.”
