Wolf Pack Athletics and the Alumni Association of Loyola University New Orleans have partnered with Ye Olde College Inn for an evening to support the university’s basketball program.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 4-11 p.m., 20 percent of all sales will go toward the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Ye Olde College Inn, located at 3000 South Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans, is owned and operated by Loyola alumnus John Blancher ’76, who also owns the neighboring New Orleans institution Rock 'n' Bowl.
In just their second season of play in the Southern States Athletic Conference, the men’s basketball team captured the West Division Regular Season Championship. Wolf Pack head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando also enjoyed his best year with the program in his eight-year career. The Pack finished the season 20-10 overall and 11-7 in SSAC play. The Wolf Pack had the best regular season winning percentage (.679) and their first 20-win season since Jack Orsley’s 1947-48 squad. In the final game of the regular season, Loyola emerged with a 62-55 win over the University of Mobile in a winner-take-all game for the divisional crown. Loyola’s hot stretch of play resulted in them receiving a vote in the NAIA Division I Top 25 Poll on Feb. 27. The vote marked the first time the Wolf Pack had been acknowledged during the season and put them in a tie for 37th in the nation.
The Wolf Pack Women finished the 2011-12 season with a 23-6 record, losing in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament. Senior Keiva Council led all scorers in the post season tilt with a tournament-high 34 points. The 5-foot-8-inch senior guard also added four rebounds, four steals and two assists. This was Loyola’s fifth national tournament appearance and head coach Kellie Kennedy’s second at the helm. The 23-6 overall record and 14-4 in conference play marked the second best winning percentage in the program’s history. It was Kennedy’s third 20-plus win season in her four years at Loyola. Loyola ranked nationally in the NAIA in a remarkable 15 categories, including tops in the NAIA in field goal percentage (46.0 percent).
