(New Orleans, La.) Wolf Pack Athletics and the Alumni Association of Loyola University New Orleans have partnered with Ye Olde College Inn for an evening to support the university’s basketball program.
On Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 4 to 11 p.m., 20 percent of all sales will benefit the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Ye Olde College Inn, located at 3000 South Carrollton Ave. in New Orleans, is owned and operated by Loyola alumnus John Blancher ’76, who also owns the neighboring New Orleans institution Rock 'n' Bowl.
Dr. Michael Giorlando and the men’s basketball team are looking forward to a fantastic 2013-14 season. The Wolf Pack returns 11 of 13 letter winners to a squad that took down three top 15 teams last year. The Pack have added three impact freshmen to a talented group of returners. The squad finished with a 16-14 overall record last season. However, the Wolf Pack defeated No. 6 Southern Poly, 80-67 and defeated crosstown rival 13th ranked Xavier, 77-67. Loyola closed the regular season with an exciting senior night where they overwhelmed the ninth ranked team in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Faulkner, to the tune of a 61-43 victory. Loyola stepped up their play for the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship tournament as the Wolf Pack opened against Coastal Georgia, with the Wolf Pack pulling away in the second half en route to a 99-72 victory. The Pack advanced to the SSAC Quarterfinals.
Entering their fourth season of competition in the SSAC, the 2013-14 women’s basketball team is confident in their ability to clinch a spot in the SSAC Tournament for the second consecutive year and are ready to make a return to the NAIA National Tournament. Head coach Kellie Kennedy is enthusiastic about this year’s squad – a group that possesses the depth, drive and determination necessary to win a championship. Senior Jasmine Brewer will look to lead her team to a successful season. Brewer had an impressive 2012-13 season, earning a top 20 ranking in NAIA Division I in offensive rebounds per game and placing 41st in the country in total rebounds per contest. As a junior, she moved into sixth place on Loyola’s all-time scoring list with 373 points on the season and a career total of 1,271.
