WESTWEGO, La. – Tyler Duplantis delivered a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as the Loyola University baseball team came from behind late to take the 6-5 win from the University of Mobile on Friday night.
Ryan Scott had a big night at the plate, going 4-for-5 with an RBI. Taylor Domengeaux was 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, Garrett Lacour scored two runs, and Duplantis had two hits and a pair of RBIs. Five Rams had two hits each, and Cody Barber led the team with two runs scored.
Mobile (23-12, 5-5 SSAC) took the early lead, scoring in each of the first two innings. Justin Beck led off the first with a double down the left field line on the first pitch of the game. Two batters later, a Jeremy Williams single to left field plated Beck. In the second, Barber hit a solo home run with one out in the inning, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead.
The Wolfpack (11-25, 3-4 SSAC) tied things up in the bottom half of the second. Duplantis led off with his first home run of the season, driving a ball over the left field fence. Evan Turkish and Brandon Snow each then reached base on singles. A failed pickoff throw got past the Rams’ first baseman, allowing Turkish to reach home.
Loyola took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Steve Daigle led off with a double down the left field line. A groundout allowed pinch runner Lacour to reach third, and Lacour was driven home on a Domengeaux single.
Down 3-2, Mobile quickly recaptured the lead in the top of the sixth. Catcher Sam Mahoney, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, scored on a Wolfpack error, knotting the game at 3-all. Two batters later, Cameron White hit a single, scoring a runner from second.
Loyola again took the lead after scoring runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Domengeaux and Cazayoux each hit two-out singles, and Domengeaux scored on a Scott single, tying the game. In the next inning, Snow hit a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield, scoring Lacour from second.
Facing defeat, the Rams rallied in the top of the ninth. Josh Blaylock led off with a double. On an 0-2 count, Beck hit a single past the pitcher’s mound, scoring Blaylock and tying the game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Domengeaux and Scott each hit one-out singles. Chris May then reached base on a potentially game-saving infield error, loading the bases. Duplantis took the batter’s box and hit a single through the infield, scoring Domengeaux from third and winning the game for the Wolfpack, 6-5.
Logan Peterson pitched 8.1 solid innings for LU, but did not earn a decision, as he left with the game tied, 5-5. Carl Labit (3-1) got the win for the ‘Pack in relief. John Ladnier (2-4) took the loss for Mobile.
Mobile will return to face the ‘Pack at Segnette Field for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m. Loyola will look to stay perfect against Loyola on the season, after starting the season 3-0 against the Rams.
