First-inning runs fail to hold up as BSC completes sweep, 9-3

WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team scored a pair of first-inning runs and took the early lead for the third game in a row, but Birmingham-Southern College came from behind again to take the third straight game from the Wolfpack, 9-3.

Second baseman Brandon Snow hit his first home run of the season. Tyler Duplantis had a double and a run scored, and Karson Cullins drove in a run for the ’Pack (6-13). Drew Leachman went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Panthers (11-1).

Loyola took the lead right away, when Cullins hit into a fielder’s choice with one away, plating Slade Sanders from third. Tyler Duplantis scored on the same play as BSC shortstop Jon Walker made a wild throw trying to complete the double play.

LU starter Logan Peterson retired the first two batters of the second, but two-out production for the Panthers paid off Leachman hit a grand slam over the left field fence.

Snow brought the game back within one in the bottom of the third with his solo home run to left-center. A home run by Bruce Maxwell contributed to another four-run inning in the top of the sixth that kept the game out of reach for Loyola.

The Wolfpack returns to Segnette Field next weekend as they take on conference foe Belhaven in a three-game series. The Blazers and Wolfpack will play a night game on Friday, March 4 at 6 p.m., and the teams will play a double-header the next day starting at 1 p.m.
