Fifty years ago, Loyola basketball teams of the 1960s played some of the best teams in the country: Kentucky, LSU, FSU, Michigan State, Oklahoma City, Texas Western, and Miami. Not only did they become a solid team on the court, they became one off the court as well.
“Our players came from all over the USA,” said John Erb ’67. “They were great guys and tough competitors. All were top players from their schools and regions.”
The golden anniversary of the men’s basketball team will take place on Wednesday, April 16. The festivities will begin at 2:00 p.m. with a campus tour. Following the tour, a reception will take place in the Faculty/Staff Dining Room in the Danna Student Center, 2nd floor. Attendees will be able to see photos and a video from their time as student athletes.
“Reunions are always fun just to catch up,” said Charlie Young ’64, “And it will be great to see a lot of guys and gals that we haven’t seen in a long time.”
Prior to the tour and reception, Erb has planned a dinner on Tuesday, April 15 at Bon Ton Café, 401 Magazine Street, at 7:00 p.m. Please notify the restaurant at 504-524-3386, if you will be joining the 1960s basketball group.
“I played 1963 - 67, and met some really great players and made solid friendships,” said Erb, “Unfortunately, life took us all in different directions. Many returned to their hometowns or were drafted into military service. For the most part I have not seen or talked to these guys in fifty years!”
