NEW ORLEANS, La. – Junior Corey Gray scored a game-high 28 points and freshman Robert Lovaglio shot 9-for-11 from the field to lead Loyola University New Orleans to a 79-70 win over conference foe Belhaven University Saturday evening in The Den.

The ’Pack (9-8, 2-1 SSAC) had a strong start to the game, taking an early 19-5 lead over the Blazers (11-9, 2-2 SSAC), thanks in part to Lovaglio’s seven points over that stretch.

LU continued to lead by double-digits for the remainder of the first half, as the ’Pack controlled the game from inside the lane and outside the arc. Loyola outscored Belhaven 18-10 in the paint, and the Wolfpack shot 6-for-9 from behind the line.

Darrinton Moncrieffe led the ’Pack’s first-half defensive prowess, as the 6-9 senior center blocked five Blazer shots in the first frame. Gray, coming off of a career-high 34 points in his last outing, led the Wolfpack at the break with 25 points, as he went 3-for-4 from three-point range in the first half.

Trailing 41-28 at halftime, the Blazers mounted a comeback early in the second half. BC cut the Loyola lead to single digits three minutes into the half as Blazer guard and New Orleans native Rob Wallace converted on an old-fashioned three-point play.

Led by Wallace and fellow New Orleans native Nathaniel Roche’, the Blazers chipped away at the Wolfpack’s lead until finally pulling ahead 53-31 with 10:25 to play, off of a Wallace fast-break layup.

The ‘Pack and Blazers went back-and-forth for several minutes until Loyola pulled ahead for good after a 8-0 run that put LU up 10 points.

Moncrieffe finished the contest with seven blocks, three assists and 11 rebounds to lead the Wolfpack in all three categories. Lovaglio finished with 20.

Roche’ highlighted the Blazers’ box score with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

After racking up two conference wins over the weekend, the Loyola men next take on William Carey University on the road on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
