KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Junior guard Corey Gray has been named the NAIA National Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, as announced today by the NAIA national office. Gray, earlier named the current SSAC Player of the Week, scored a career-high 34 points on 8-for-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc to help Loyola University New Orleans (9-8, 2-1 SSAC) earn a conference win over Faulkner University on Jan. 20. Two nights later, Gray again helped to lead the ’Pack to a come-from-behind home victory over SSAC rival Belhaven University.
Overall on the week, Gray shot 15-for-29 from the field, including 11-for-15 from three-point range. Gray also shot 21-for-26 from the free throw line and grabbed eight rebounds for the Wolfpack.
Gray, a junior from Greenwood, Ind., has appeared in every game for the ’Pack since he arrived on campus in 2008. Gray is currently ranked third in the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage, as he has hit on 50.6 percent of his attempts. Meanwhile, he is averaging 16.3 points per game on the year, and has averaged 18.5 points per game over the Wolfpack’s last six games. He has scored in double-figures in all but two of LU’s 17 games this season.
This marks the first time an LU athlete has been recognized nationally since Gray’s teammate Ryan Brock earned third-team All-American honors at the end of last season.
Gray and the rest of the Wolfpack return to action against William Carey and Auburn-Montgomery on Jan. 27 and 29, respectively. They will take on the Crusaders in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the game against the Senators in Montgomery, Ala. on Jan. 29 at 4 p.m. Live stats can be viewed from the LU website, wolfpack.loyno.edu.
