NEW ORLEANS, La. – Claire Landry won a big match at the women’s number one singles spot, but the Loyola University men’s and women’s tennis teams fell to Xavier University on Friday, 9-0 and 6-3 respectively.
Landry, a senior from Lafayette, La., dropped her first set to Amber Brown, 6-3, but came back and won the second by the same score. The two went to a decisive super-tiebreaker, which Landry pulled out, 10-7.
Loyola won the three doubles and six singles spots by default.
Chelsea Keene also put up a strong fight at the number five singles position, falling to Ashley McGill, 6-3, 6-1.
The Gold Rush outmatched the ‘Pack at each spot against the Loyola men. Brian Pena at number one singles snapped a three-match winning streak with his loss Friday.
The Wolfpack will play its last local match of the year when it takes on the University of New Orleans on Friday, April 1 at 3 p.m. at the UNO tennis complex. Head coach Zubin Engineer will face off against his wife Piyanart Engineer, who is an assistant coach for UNO.
