BATON ROUGE, La. – A five-run sixth inning could not
complete the LU comeback, as Southern University defeated
the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team, 8-6, late Wednesday night.
Brandon Snow had a two-hit ball game for the ‘Pack, and
Ryan Scott helped to fuel the offense with a pair of RBIs.
Ozzie Lamis and Kevin Williams paced the Jaguars with three
SU started off strong, scoring six runs in the first three
innings. The Jaguars produced three runs off of three hits
and an error in the bottom of the first. Southern added two
more in the second, as four consecutive batters reached base
with two outs. A Wolfpack error led to another run in the
bottom of the third.
Loyola mounted its attack in the sixth inning, bringing the
game back within one. Bradley Brunet, Philip Cazayoux, Snow
and Tyler Duplantis led off the inning with four straight
singles, scoring Brunet and Cazayoux. Scott then doubled,
bringing in Snow and Duplantis. Chris May then hit a double
to left field, scoring Scott. SU’s Joshua Rochelle then
took the mound, and was able to get out of the inning,
despite walking Brunet to load the bases with two outs.
The Jaguars added runs in the sixth and eighth innings to
take an 8-5 lead. A leadoff double in the sixth led to a
one-out RBI single in the sixth, and Williams hit an RBI
double in the eighth to stretch the lead to three.
Taylor Domengeaux hit a leadoff double in the top of the
ninth. Cazayoux’s groundout to second scored Domengeaux,
bringing the game to 8-6. Snow reached base on another
single with two gone in the inning, but a strikeout ended
Loyola next takes the field against William Carey for a
three-game road series in Hattiesburg, Miss. Game one is set
to start at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 18, while the two teams
will play a double-header the next day, starting at 1 p.m.
