New Orleans, La.- Freshman Amy Moody had a career high 27 points as Loyola University New Orleans defeated Faulkner University 76-69 in women’s basketball Thursday night in The Den.
Loyola never trailed in the game as Jasmine Brewer scored the opening points with a jumper two minutes into the contest. Faulkner answered on their next possession as Brittney Carter knotted the score. Keiva Council responded to give Loyola the lead for good on one of her career high six three pointers in the game.
Later, Council pushed the lead to 10 points with another three pointer with 7:08 to play.
Faulkner rallied with six unanswered over the next two minutes, capped by a Lueticia Cuellar bucket in the paint. The four point deficit was as close as the Eagles would get the rest of the half.
Moody, who converted 3 of 6 from distance, gave Loyola the largest lead of the stanza with another three pointer to make the score 40-29. Faulkner closed out the remaining 1:46 with five unanswered as the Wolfpack led 40-34 at the break.
In the second half, Faulkner kept it within single digits until the 9:52 mark. Consecutive buckets by Moody made the score 65-52, Loyola’s largest lead of the game with 8:51 to play.
The Eagles rallied with a 12-0 run, capped by a Carter lay-in to cut the Wolfpack margin to a single point with 3:55 remaining.
The streaky play continued with eight straight points by Loyola. Jackie Padilla extended the Wolfpack lead to 73-64 with a field goal at the 1:59 mark and the Wolfpack held on for the 76-69 victory.
Moody, who transferred at the break from Oral Roberts, converted 8 of 14 from the field and 8 of 9 from the line en route to her 27 points. Brewer had the second double double of her career as the freshman from Houston had 19 points and a career high 12 rebounds. Council finished with 19 points, including 6 of 7 from behind the arc. She also added seven assists. Amy Sprout had 10 rebounds for Loyola (13-5, 2-0 SSAC).
For Faulkner (14-4, 1-1 SSAC), Carter led with 24 points and a game high 19 rebounds. Cuellar had 15 and Katie Pavlik added 12 to round out the leading scorers.
The victory moves Loyola into sole possession of first place in the SSAC West Division. The Wolfpack will return to action on Saturday afternoon in The Den against Belhaven. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m.
