Loyola’s Buhler earns his first victory in sweep of Blackburn

Cullins had a sac fly in game one and went 4 for 4 in game two against Blackburn

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans won both games of the doubleheader against Blackburn College. Karson Cullins hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Loyola won 6-5 in game one and 8-2 in game two on Tuesday afternoon at Segnette Field.

Game 1: Blackburn 5 Loyola 6

The Wolf Pack and Beavers finished the seven innings of game one tied at four. Jacob Conder opened the eighth with a double and was moved to third on Vinnie Birk’s sacrifice bunt. Franklin Bush singled to right to score Conder but Cullins threw out Voigtlander trying to take third base on the play.

Loyola responded in the bottom half of the inning as Garrett Lacour reached on a hit by pitch. Nevin Brown sacrificed Lacour to scoring position, before pinch hitter Britt Pellegrin also took first on a hit by pitch. Brandon Snow singled to load the bases, and Philip Cazayoux walked to score Lacour and tie the game. With one out, Cullins hit a fly ball to right field, which scored Pellegrin and ended the contest.

Blackburn scored in the first inning as Bush reached on a walk and got to third on a wild pitch by Cameron Retif. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Donny Furhop.

The Wolf Pack answered with four runs in the third inning as Allen Newman started the rally with a bunt for a single, Cazayoux singled then Cullins knocked him home on a single through the infield. Turkish reached on a walk, then Cazayoux scored on a wild pitch. Garrett Lacour followed that with a two out RBI single up the middle that scored Cullins and Turkish to give the Wolf Pack a 4-1 lead.

The Beavers were able to respond with three runs in the fourth to tie the game. Furhop tripled to right field which scored Birk and Bush after Conder had scored on a passed ball. The game stayed tied until extra innings.

Cullins went 1 for 3 with two RBI’s and a run for the Wolf Pack while Cazayoux had a 2 for 4 day with a run and a RBI. Garrett Lacour went 1 for 3 with two RBI’s a run.

Furhop had a 1 for 4 day with three RBI’s to lead Blackburn. The shortstop Bush had a 1 for 3 day with a RBI and two runs while also walking twice.

Retif earned his first start of the season and allowed four runs, one earned, four hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Conor Thurman came in and pitched 2.1 innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts for the Pack. Tony Asta (1-3) earned the win after pitching two innings of relief and allowed one run on five hits.

Caleb Schupbach pitched seven innings for the Beavers and allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks while striking out three. Cody Meyer (0-1) moved to the mound for the eighth inning and allowed two runs on one hit and one walk while picking up the loss.

Game 2: Blackburn 2 Loyola 8

Loyola scored five runs in the first two innings to jump all over Blackburn in game two of the doubleheader as they went on to win 8-2 to sweep the doubleheader.

The Wolf Pack scored three runs in the first as five Loyola batters in a row got a hit off Kaycee Jones. Turkish hit a double in the middle of the rally to score Cullins. Daniel Pappas singled to right-centerfield to score LoSauro and Turkish.

The Wolf Pack came back in the second inning and loaded the bases before LoSauro walked to score Lacour. Turkish followed that at bat with a single to bring home Snow. However, Conder walked with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning and Bush hit a sacrifice fly to get two runs back for the Beavers.

Loyola (8-20) added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Cazayoux started the rally with a bunt single. Cullins knocked him in after Cazayoux had stolen second base. LoSauro doubled to left field to score Cullins, then Britt Pellegrin doubled to score LoSauro and Turkish to stretch the Wolf Pack lead to six runs.

Cullins went 4 for 4 in game two with a RBI and two runs. LoSauro went 2 for 3 with two runs and two RBI’s. Turkish had a 3 for 4 night as he crossed the plate once and knocked in two teammates. Pellegrin also collected three hits for the Pack.

Blackburn (0-3) had five different players tally a hit in the loss. Bush and Conder each collected a RBI while Witkus and Birk scored the runs.

Jared Belmonte started and worked three innings for the Pack while allowing two runs on two hits and three walks. Joel Buhler (1-1) relieved him and pitched three scoreless innings only allowing three hits and striking out five Beavers to earn the win. Brunet finished the game with a scoreless, hitless inning.

Kaycee Jones (0-1) threw four innings for Blackburn while allowing five runs, four earned runs, eight hits and three walks while losing the decision. Tim Hillis pitched a one hit fifth inning. Marcus Kelly allowed three runs on five hits in the sixth inning for the Beavers.
Loyola and Blackburn will be back in action for the series finale on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at Jesuit’s John Ryan Stadium.
