Loyola’s Dr. Michael Giorlando honored at NABC luncheon

New Orleans, La- Loyola University New Orleans head men’s basketball coach and director of athletics and wellness Dr. Michael Giorlando was honored at the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Hillyard Champions Luncheon this afternoon at the Riverfront Hilton. NABC member coaches who led their collegiate team to regular season conference championships were recognized. Giorlando led the Wolfpack to the SSAC West Division Championship this season.

Earlier in the day, Giorlando was presented the 2011-12 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team award from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The NAIA presents the award to one team at the end of the season for each of the 23 championship sports. Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate in every day decisions respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. These institutions and athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.


“I’m very humbled to receive these two awards from the NABC and the NAIA on behalf of Loyola University New Orleans. To be recognized along with the best in college basketball is quite an honor. This is a testament to the hard work of our players and our assistant coaches. I also want to thank the entire Wolfpack community for their support this season,” said Giorlando.
Wolfpack head coach Dr. Michael Giorlando enjoyed his best year with the program in his eight year career. The ‘Pack finished the season 20-10 overall and 11-7 in SSAC play. The Wolfpack earned the best regular season winning percentage (.679) and their first 20 win season since Jack Orsley’s 1947-48 squad.

The NABC Convention runs from March 29-April 2 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and is held in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four here in New Orleans.
