New Orleans, La – Junior guard Corey Gray closed out the month of January with yet another honor as the Greenwood, Indiana native was named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for January by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Gray, earlier named the NAIA Division I National and SSAC Player of the Week as well as the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight’s honor roll, scored a career-high 34 points on 8-for-10 shooting from behind the three-point arc to help Loyola University New Orleans earn a conference win over Faulkner University on Jan. 20. Two nights later, Gray again helped to lead the ’Pack to a come-from-behind home victory over SSAC rival Belhaven University, scoring 28 points.
For the month, Gray averaged 17.8 points per game in leading the Wolfpack men to a 5-3 record including victories in three of the last four contests. He is the first Loyola student athlete to be named Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month in recent memory.
Gray has appeared in every game for the ’Pack since he arrived on campus in 2008. He is currently ranked fourth in the NAIA in three-point field goal percentage, as he has hit on 49.0 percent of his attempts. Meanwhile, he is averaging 16.2 points per game on the year. Gray has scored in double-figures in all but two of LU’s 19 games this season.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Gray and the rest of the Wolfpack return to action against the University of Mobile and Spring Hill College on Feb. 3 and 5, respectively. They will take on the Rams on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the game against the Badgers in on Feb. 8 at 5 p.m. The tilt on Saturday will be Loyola’s Hall of Fame Game as well as Jesuit Basketball Spotlight featuring two Jesuit institutions.
