(Natchitoches, La.) Loyola University New Orleans Sports Information Department earned recognition at the Louisiana Sports Writing Association’s (LSWA) annual writing and sports information contest. Wolf Pack intern Jared Prescott’s story, “Loyola baseball players bring more than the sport to Belize” earned third place in the Best Release category. The award was part of the Sports Information Division offered by the LSWA.

Prescott’s story was featured on the Loyola Wolf Pack website on March 8th, 2013 and detailed six Wolf Pack baseball players who travelled to the Mayan village of San Jose in Belize. The student-athletes served as English and math teachers for the children before spending the afternoon teaching the children the game of baseball. The trip was sponsored by Loyola’s Office of Mission and Ministry Ignacio Volunteer Program and was led by Fr. Ted Dziak, the Vice President of Mission and Ministry.

The story was joined in the top three finishers by a Louisiana Tech feature about football player Hayden Slack and category winner about LSU women’s basketball team’s second round victory in the NCAA tournament.

“This is a deserving honor for Jared and Loyola. His story highlights Loyola’s mission of preparing students to lead meaningful lives with and for others. We are very proud of Jared and the student-athletes he featured in the article,” said Associate Athletic Director Brett Simpson, who leads the external affairs for Wolf Pack Athletics.

Prescott came to Loyola after working in the athletics department at California Institute of Technology in his hometown of Pasadena, California. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 2010 with a B.S. in Mathematical Economics.

Loyola was one of seven schools to receive awards at the writing and sports information contest. The LSWA also handed out awards for writing, makeup, play by play, media guides, photography, websites, and many other categories for coverage of high school, collegiate, and professional sports throughout Louisiana.

The awards were handed out at the LSWA Awards banquet which was held in conjunction with the LSWA Hall of Fame inductions held in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The 2013 Hall of Fame class included nine inductees, the most prominent of which were Shaquille O’Neal and Kevin Mawae.
