Loyola and Mobile split doubleheader

Kevin Lindsey earned the win for the Pack in game one of the DH

(Mobile, Ala.) Loyola University New Orleans and University of Mobile split a baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field on the campus of the University of Mobile. Loyola took the first game 4-2 before Mobile responded with a 3-0 win in the final game of the three game series which opened conference play for both teams.

Game 1: Loyola 4 Mobile 2

Loyola took the first game on the back of a complete game from Kevin Lindsey (2-1). Lindsey pitched all seven innings while allowing seven hits and two runs, neither of which were earned. He struck out one while notching his second victory of the season.

The Pack took a 1-0 lead as John Nicholson led off the fourth inning with a single. Nicholson moved to second on a wild pitch and then went on to third on a Karson Cullins groundout. He scored when Toscano dropped a single into shallow left center field for the first run of the game..

In the Rams half, Lindsey allowed two unearned runs in the frame. Neil Hudson led off with a single and advanced to second on an error from Harold Toscano that allowed Dakota Spikes to reach base. Keith Granger executed a bunt to advance the runners and Hudson came around to score on a Jared Brannon groundout. Philip McDuffie followed with a single down the left field line to score Spikes to give Mobile a 2-1 lead.

The Pack retook the lead in the sixth inning with two runs. Brandon Snow singled to lead off the frame, he stole second base before Nicholson reached on a walk. Cullins followed with a single to rightfield to load the bases. Snow scored on a wild pitch. Nevin Ball put the ball in play, but Payne Palmer bobbled the chance allowing Nicholson to score.

The Pack tacked on an extra run in the seventh inning as Snow singled singled with one out. He advanced to third on an error by Trey Cokrell and scored on a Nicholson single up the middle.

Philip Cazayoux, Snow, and Nicholson all tallied two hits. Snow and Nicholson each scored twice while Nicholson, Toscano, and Brown tallied the Wolf Pack RBI’s.

Hudson and McDuffie each had two hits. Hudson and Spikes scored the Rams runs while Brannon and McDuffie tallied the RBI’s.

Tucker Ward (1-1) picked up the loss as he pitched five innings while allowing six hits, two walks, three runs, two earned, while striking out six. Jacob Hyde allowed three hits and one unearned run in two innings of relief work.

Game 2: Loyola 0 Mobile 3

Jacob Knowles (1-1) pitched a one hitter for Mobile while striking out 11 Wolf Pack hitters as he picked up a complete game victory in the rubber match of the series.

Joel Buhler (1-2) pitched 6.1 innings for the Pack while allowing nine hits and three runs as he took the loss. Nick Moore followed with .2 of an inning giving up two hits. Conor Thurman pitched the eighth inning allowing one hit and no runs.

Tyler Hardy singled with one out in the third inning. He stole second and moved to third on a Cockrell single and scored on a Braxton Hamil sacrifice fly to open the scoring.

Hardy again started a scoring rally in the fifth inning with a single. Cockrell singled to move Hardy to third and Hamil hit another sacrifice fly to score Hardy.

Hamil opened the Rams’ seventh with a single, Hudson followed with a single. Hamil scored when Angelo Bruno doubled down the left field line to make the score 3-0.

Toscano collected the only Wolf Pack (5-4, 1-2) hit of the game with a third inning single.

Hardy was 3 for 4 with two runs while Hamil was 1 for 1 with one run and two RBI’s. Hudson, Bruno, and Cockrell each collected two hits for Mobile (8-4, 2-1)

Mobile took the opener of the series on Friday night, 6-4. The Wolf Pack will be back in action on Tuesday, February 18th as they take on Nicholls State University at 6 p.m. in Thibodeaux, La.
