NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans head baseball coach Gerald Cassard announced the addition of nine new student-athletes for the 2012 season.
The class consists of three high school stars and six junior college standouts. Six of the nine newcomers are Louisiana natives, including three freshmen and three junior college players.
“I am excited about this year's recruiting class,” said head baseball coach Gerald Cassard. “The coaching staff identified specific recruiting needs and all of these young men should fill and meet those specific needs for our program.”
The ‘Pack’s new class inked six right-handed pitchers, four of whom also play infield. Junior pitcher Tony Asta (Chandler, Az./ Gateway Community College) and freshman pitcher Ryan Laughlin (Pearl River, La./Pearl River High School) can contribute from third base, while freshman pitcher Nevin Brown (Takoma Park, Md./ Montgomery Blair High School) and junior relief pitcher/shortstop Harold Toscano (Metairie, La./ Delgado Community College) will also see some infield action. The other two pitchers are juniors Jared Belmonte (Chalmette, La./ Nicholls State & Baton Rouge Community College) and Matthew Ditsworth (Mesa, Az./ Mesa Community College & Gateway Community College).
In addition too, freshmen infielders Brian Reaney (Chalmette, La./ Holy Cross High School) and Allen Newman (Belle Chasse, La./ Archbishop Shaw High School) join the ‘Pack baseball squad this year, with Reaney possibly seeing time at catcher. Rounding out the impressive new class will be sophomore outfielder Edward Dupont (Houma, La. /Rhodes College).
