Loyola baseball drops doubleheader to Shorter

WESTWEGO, La. - Shorter University completed a conference series sweep of Loyola University New Orleans taking both games of a double header 15-0 and 9-3 Saturday at Segnette Field.

In the first game, Shorter scored in five innings, including a five run fifth on the way to a 15-0 victory.

Ryan Newell (5-0) pitched a complete game two hit shutout, striking out nine and walking five. Bobby Triglia and Willie Lewis each had three hits for the Hawks. Triglia drove in four runs and scored three, while Lewis drove in three and scored once.

Loyola starter Matt Ditsworth (2-1) was tagged with the loss. He pitched into the fifth inning and gave up nine runs on nine hits and struck out two.

In the series finale, the Hawks scored in the five final frames for the 9-3 win. Bud Fuller (2-0) got the win for Shorter in relief. He threw 3.1 hitless innings and struck out three. Blake McCullers and Kendall Lacey each had four hits for the Hawks (13-5, 4-2 SSAC)

Loyola starter Matt Guerry gave up four runs, three earned on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. He is now 1-3 on the season. Brandon Snow was 2 for 4 with a RBI and run scored. Loyola is now 9-8 and 1-5 SSAC in the 2012 campaign.
