Loyola baseball eyes Southern matchup

Garrett Lacour and the Pack take on Southern University on Tuesday

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team will begin a stretch of three straight midweek games against NCAA Division I opponents as they take on Southern University Baton Rouge. The game will be played at Lee-Hines Field on Tuesday, April 8th with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.

Loyola (21-21) will send freshman Stewart Campbell (3-3) to the mound to start the game. Campbell holds a 2.86 ERA in 34.2 innings this season. He has made six starts and 11 appearances while recording 20 strikeouts against 29 hits and 12 walks. Conner Thurman (3-0) comes out of the Wolf Pack bullpen and has earned six saves this year. The junior ranks 15th in the country in saves as he has made 20 appearances and two starts this season.

The Wolf Pack offense is led by John Nicholson’s .323 average, 42 hits, 50 total bases, and eight doubles. Karson Cullins is coming off a .526 week which boosted his overall mark to .310 to go with a team best 23 RBI’s. Brandon Snow leads the squad with 29 runs and nine steals. Phil Cazayoux has a .319 average and a .438 on-base percentage as the Wolf Pack leadoff hitter.

Southern’s (5-16) pitching staff is fronted by Santo Saldivar (2-0). Saldivar has a 2.76 ERA in six starts and 32.2 innings this season. He has recorded 29 strikeouts against 28 hits and 17 walks. Rafeal Diaz has recorded three saves and a 1.42 ERA in nine appearances out of the Jaguars bullpen.

The Jaguars offense is led by a .350 average, 28 hits, and 12 steals from Lance Jones. D.J. Wallaces has swatted five home runs and leads the team with 17 RBI’s. Tyler Kirksey has scored a team best 11 runs.

Loyola is coming off a three game series against Martin Methodist this past weekend. Loyola made late rallies in both halves of Friday’s doubleheader but fell 12-10 and 6-4. It was a different story on Saturday as they jumped out to the lead and rode a nine inning complete game performance from Daniel Posway to a 7-1 victory.

The Jaguars haven’t had a game since April 1st when they defeated Nicholls State University 5-2 on the road. Ryan Flynn pitched four innings and gave up one hit and one run for Southern. Jones, Marcus Tomlin, and Robinson Mateo collected RBI’s in the Jaguars win.

Loyola split a two game series with Southern last season. Southern won game one 8-2 on April 16th as Jose De La Torre hit a three run home run in the first inning to help the Jaguars to victory. The Wolf Pack took game two of the series 7-3 on April 23rd thanks to home runs from Britt Pellegrin and Evan Turkish and a two RBI double from Phil Cazayoux.
