(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team returns to conference play this weekend with a three game set against William Carey University at Segnette Field. The teams will play on Friday, March 28th at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday, March 29th at 1 p.m.
Loyola (17-17, 6-9) will send Daniel Posway (3-3) to the mound on Friday night. Posway sports a 2.64 ERA in seven starts this year. He has worked 44.1 innings this year and has recorded 20 strikeouts. He has given up 44 hits, 11 walks, and 13 earned runs. Kevin Lindsey (4-4) has five complete games in eight starts this year. Lindsey has pitched 49.1 innings and given up only six earned runs and four walks this season. He ranks 19th in the country in ERA with a mark of 1.09 and 20th in walks allowed. Joel Buhler (2-5) will start the final game of the series for the Pack. Buhler leads the team with 39 strikeouts in 46.2 innings this season. He has a 3.47 ERA in eight starts.
Phil Cazayoux leads the team with a .349 average and a .468 on-base percentage. Karson Cullins used a seven RBI game the last time he took the field to take the team lead in RBI’s. Cullins now has 15 RBI’s and one home run on the season. Brandon Snow leads the team with 22 runs and seven steals. Jack Nicholson leads the squad with 33 hits, 41 total bases, and eight doubles this year. He has a .317 average, 18 walks, 21 runs, and 13 RBI’s.
William Carey (17-17, 7-8) will send Gavin Culpepper (3-2), Josh Wood (3-3), and Jace Belcher (1-1) to the mound for the weekend set. Culpepper has 35 strikeouts in 45 innings. He has allowed 36 hits, 13 walks, and 13 earned runs in compiling a 2.60 ERA. Wood has pitched a team best 48.2 innings and recorded a team high 40 strikeouts. He has a 2.77 ERA in surrendering 32 hits, 25 walks and 15 earned runs. The Crusaders have used multiple options as their third weekend starter this year, but Belcher has taken the last two turns. Belcher has 10 strikeouts, 12 walks, and seven hits in 10 innings this year. Belcher has a 4.50 ERA as he has given up five earned runs.
DJ Johnson has a Crusaders best .321 average this year. Michael Wells has a team high 20 RBI’s on 31 hits. Jeremy Ferguson has scored 23 times as he has a .319 average and 17 walks. Scott Fabre has stolen 16 bases in 18 attempts this year to lead the team.
The Wolf Pack split a midweek series against Tougaloo College the last time they took the field. Cullins hit a grand slam and had seven RBI’s in game one of Tuesday’s doubleheader as the Wolf Pack defeated Tougaloo 13-4. Tougaloo responded by taking game two 13-3 despite a two RBI single from Blake Battle.
William Carey split a midweek series against LSU Alexandria on Tuesday. The Crusaders won game one 3-2, before falling 10-9 in the nightcap. Johnson went 2 for 4 in the game with a run and a RBI to lead William Carey to the game one win.
Last season, Loyola took one of three games against William Carey. Loyola seized game one of the series 2-1 as they used a sixth inning rally to secure the victory. Carmelo LoSauro and Britt Pellegrin knocked in Tony Asta and Phil Cazayoux to propel the Pack. William Carey captured game two 8-2 before winning the finale 6-3. Loyola scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the rally fell short as the game ended on a double play ball.
William Carey currently sits in a tie for 9th place with a 7-8 conference record. Loyola is one game back of the Crusaders. The top eight teams qualify for the SSAC Championship tournament. Loyola is just two games out of a qualification place.
