Loyola baseball hosts top ranked Lee in weekend series

Kevin Lindsey and the Wolf Pack staff will look to shut down the Flames

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball will take on Lee University for a three game series set to begin at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 29th with a doubleheader at Segnette Field. The two teams are then slated to play a single game on Saturday, March 30th with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Lee is ranked #1 in the latest NAIA baseball poll.

Loyola (9-28, 2-16) enters the series coming off a three game set against Faulkner. Loyola’s Daniel Posway started game one of the series and threw four no-hit innings, but the Wolf Pack fell 4-2. In game two of the series Kevin Lindsey tied a career high with five strikeouts for the Pack, but Loyola fell 3-0. In the series finale Joel Buhler got the second start of his career and managed a seven strikeout game, but the Wolf Pack fell to #9 Faulkner.

Lee (26-7, 15-3) is tied for the SSAC conference lead with Faulkner. Both Faulkner and Lee are 15-3 in the conference. Lee’s last conference matchup was against Southern Poly, but the Flames dominated as they outscored Southern Poly 28-1 in the three game set. Lee took on the previous #1 Tennessee Wesleyan in their last game and came away 4-3 winners in 10 innings. Corey Davis walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning to complete the comeback, as Lee trailed 3-0 entering the eighth inning.

Loyola will look to take down the Flames thanks to an offense that ranks seventh in NAIA in total doubles while also ranking in the top 20 in total hits and RBI’s. Karson Cullins paces the Wolf Pack squad with a .346 batting average while also leading the team with three home runs, 28 RBI’s, and 12 steals. Carmelo LoSauro and Evan Turkish have combined for 25 doubles this season. Senior Philip Cazayoux leads the Pack with 27 runs while batting at the top of the order.

The Flames enter the matchup with Loyola leading the NAIA in ERA and sixth in runs scored per game. Their offense is Corey Davis who has three home runs and a team high 31 RBI’s and 12 steals this season. Derrick Pitts leads the squad with four homers. Brady Renner tops the team with 34 runs in 33 games. Josh Silver sports a .388 average to lead all Flames in batting average.

The Wolf Pack will send Posway, Lindsey, and Buhler to the mound after all three performed well in the series against Faulkner. Lindsey leads the Pack with a 3.33 ERA in 48.2 innings. Posway paces the Pack with 30 strikeouts in 49 innings. Buhler has appeared in a team high 15 games this season as he has come out of the bullpen prior to starting in two of his last three appearances.

Lee will send Jose Samayoa, Clint Terry, and Myles Smith to the mound. All three starters have an ERA between 1.43 and 1.54 as the Flames boast a 1.83 ERA as a staff. Smith leads the Flames with 50 strikeouts in 41 innings.
