Loyola baseball to open season against Rust College

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans will open up the 2013 season with four straight games against Rust College.  The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 25th.  They will return for another doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 26th.  All games will be played at Segnette Field.

Loyola named Doug Faust the head coach in the offseason and he will look to turn around a program that went 18-33 overall and 3-27 in SSAC competition.

The Wolf Pack return several players from last year’s squad for the 2013 season including RBI leader Karson Cullins. Evan Turkish is back in the outfield after leading the team with a .301 average, .441 on base percentage, and 49 hits last season.  Brandon Snow returns after leading the team in total bases and tying for team lead in home runs with Tony Asta.  Asta is also back along with Philip Cazayoux who paced the team in runs with 32.  Cazayoux tied with Snow for the team lead with eight steals.

Jeffrey Castille is the top returning pitcher with a 4.53 ERA in 20 appearances for the Wolf Pack.  The team will also introduce a number of talented players including left handed pitchers Joseph Morris and Joel Buhler.  The squad also added right handed pitchers  Connor Thurman, Cameron Retif, Kevin Lindsey, and Daniel Posway.

They will be facing a Rust College squad that went 0-21 in 2012.  The Bearcats are a NCAA Division III squad from Holly Springs, Mississippi.  They will also be opening their season with the four weekend games.
