Loyola baseball opens home SSAC slate

Joel Buhler and the Pack will take on Blue Mountain College this weekend

(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans baseball team will return to Segnette Field for their home SSAC opener against Blue Mountain College this weekend. They open the series with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 21st followed by a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday February 22nd.

The Pack (5-5, 1-2) is coming off a 9-0 midweek loss to NCAA Division I opponent Nicholls State University on Tuesday. Stewart Campbell took the loss in his first career start as he gave up three runs in 2.2 innings of work. Nevin Brown, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Lindsey, and Philip Cazayoux each collected a hit for the Pack.

Blue Mountain (1-6, 0-3) fell 7-2 in their midweek contest against Lyon College. Josh Whittaker took the loss as he allowed five runs, two earned runs on three hits and four walks in only two innings of work. Thomas Russell had the lone RBI while outfielders Justin Whittaker and Josh Crowder crossed the plate.

Nicholson is leading the Pack with a .424 average in the early going this year as he has also compiled a team best four doubles, 14 hits, 18 total bases, and eight RBI’s. Brandon Snow has scored 10 runs and stolen three bases.

Justin Whittaker leads the team with a .364 average. Brandon Berry has scored a team best three runs and has the team’s only stolen base. Trae Allison has the lone Topper home run and is tied with Russell and Jeb Clark for team high honors in RBI’s with two.

Against, Blue Mountain Loyola will send Kevin Lindsey (2-1), Daniel Posway (1-1), and Joel Buhler (1-2). Lindsey has a 0.55 ERA in 16.1 innings so far this season as he has only allowed one earned run and one walk. Posway sports a 2.25 ERA and six strikeouts in 12 innings. Buhler tops the team with eight strikeouts in 16.1 innings of work. He has a 3.31 ERA in three starts. The team currently sports a 2.76 ERA which is ranked 32nd in the NAIA.

The Toppers will most likely send Channing Sanders (0-1), Jose Acosta (0-2) and Will Basil (0-1) to the mound. Sanders has three starts this season and has compiled a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings of work. Acosta has 10 strikeouts and a 2.13 ERA in 12.2 innings. Basil sports a 4.82 ERA but only allows hitters to hit .229 against him.

This will be the first matchup between the two schools as Blue Mountain College is competing in the SSAC for the first time this season.
