JACKSON, Miss. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team scored eight runs in the first three innings and went on to defeat Tougaloo College 15-2 in seven innings at Smith-Wills Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Loyola (16-28) advances to face top-seeded #10 Belhaven University at 6 P.M. on Thursday. Tougaloo (2-47) was eliminated from the GCAC Tournament with the loss.
Taylor Domengeaux (6-3) picked up the win, giving up two runs on seven hits. He finished with three strikeouts in five innings pitched. Carl Labit and Kevin Fontenot each threw an inning to close out the game.
Loyola had 15 hits on the day with every starter having at least one. Bradley Brunet and Ryan Scott led the Wolfpack offense with three hits and four RBI each. Brunet hit his first career home run in the fifth inning, a three-run shot off the scoreboard, while Scott finished with three doubles. Domengeaux and Lucas Wendt added two hits a piece.
William Lowe (0-3) suffered the loss for Tougaloo, giving up six runs on six hits in two innings. Shayne Odum led the Bulldog offense with two hits.
Loyola plated four in the first to grab the early lead. Scott’s first double scored Fontenot, then Caleb Templet brought in two with a triple. Tyler Duplantis made the score 4-0 with a sacrifice fly.
In the second, Loyola added a run on a sac fly from Fontenot and one on a bases loaded walk by Scott. Tougaloo got on the board in their half with an RBI single from Odum.
The Wolfpack went up 8-1 in the third after an RBI triple by Domengeaux and a groundout by Brunet. The Bulldogs answered again in the bottom of the frame, making the score 8-2 on a RBI double by Willie Walker.
Following Brunet’s homer in the fifth to make the score 11-2, Loyola scored four insurance runs in the seventh. David McChesney drew a bases loaded walk, then after a wild pitch scored a run, Scott laced a two-run double off the leftcenter wall to make the final 15-2.
