NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball squad (12-22, 1-17 SSAC) split Wednesday’s double header against Louisiana State University Alexandria (10-20). The Wolfpack took game one 5-4 before dropping game two 6-5. The ‘Pack will now travel to Montgomery this weekend for a three game set against #8 Faulkner (28-9, 15-3 SSAC), starting Friday at 6 p.m.
Jeffrey Castille (2-1) started on the mound in the seven inning game one affair. The junior lasted five innings and gave up four earned runs on nine hits.
It was a back and forth battle throughout. The Generals jumped ahead early at 1-0 in the first and again in the second to take a 3-1 advantage. The ‘Pack retaliated with three runs in the third to take their first lead of the game, only for LSU-Alexandria to knot it up in the bottom half of the frame.
Both teams recorded a run in the sixth, forcing an extra eighth inning in which the Wolfpack emerged victorious after scoring the go ahead run then staving off the Generals attack.
Senior George Smith (2-7) earned the victory in the game, replacing Castille in the sixth. Smith allowed one earned run on four hits and struck out three.
Jared Belmonte (0-0) started on the mound for game two and pitched two innings, giving up one earned run on two hits. Michael Pfister (0-1) pitched the remainder of the game (5.1 innings) as he surrendered five earned runs on six hits and picked up the loss.
The game was almost a near reversal of the opening bout. Loyola took a 3-1 lead after two before the Generals tallied three runs in the third. The ‘Pack tied it at five in the fifth and it once again came down to an extra eighth inning, this time LSU-Alexandria getting the upper hand.
Brandon Snow went 3-7 on the day with one run scored and two RBI’s. Anthony Asta finished 5-7 with two runs scored and one RBI, while Karson Cullins went 5-8 with three runs scored and one RBI.
The Wolfpack have a short turn-around as they open a three game set with #8 Faulkner starting with a single game this Friday at 6 p.m. The ‘Pack and Eagles will play a double-header on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
Loyola is still searching for their first win this season against a ranked opponent. Last weekend, the ‘Pack fell just short in knocking off then #13 Auburn Montgomery, as they fell 4-5 in extra innings. The Wolfpack can also earn their first win against Faulkner since 2006.
Faulkner is coming off of a weekend sweep of William Carey. Zak Colby powers the Eagles offense, hitting .406 on the year with 33 RBI’s. In addition, Brook Boudreaux and Matt Creel are hitting .367 and .364 respectively.
