Loyola baseball splits doubleheader against Mobile

Westwego, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans hosted the Mobile Rams for a doubleheader on Saturday at Segnette Field and came away with a split, winning 9-1 in the first and lost 9-0 in the second.

Loyola’s Taylor Domengeaux (3-1) pitched a complete game in the first contest, throwing seven innings while giving up one run on four hits while striking out two.

The Wolfpack offense scored in six of the seven innings, with a close play at plate preventing Loyola (10-19, 8-16 GCAC) from plating a run in the fourth. Caleb Templet led the way with three hits and three RBI, Steve Daigle had two hits and two RBI while David McChesney brought in a run with two hits.

Dustin Lee (1-2) took the loss for Mobile in 2.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits.

Norris Hunter led the Rams with two hits while Cody Sanderson brought home their only run.

McChesney put Loyola on the board in the first with a RBI single up the middle, then the Wolfpack scored a pair in the second to go up 3-0. Daigle brought in a run on a double down the third baseline, then Kevin Fontenot forced a throwing error on a stolen base to plate the other run.

In the third, Loyola got two more runs on singles by Templet and Daigle. The Wolfpack scored the final three on a sac fly by James Callahan in the sixth and a 2-run bases loaded single by Templet in the sixth.

Domengeaux’s bid for a shutout ended in the final inning after a sac fly by Sanderson followed two Ram singles.

In the second game, Mobile (17-23, 10-15 GCAC) grabbed the lead in the second off a Loyola error and never looked back as the won 9-0.

The Wolfpack had several chances to score through the first four innings, but Mobile was able to prevent six Loyola runners from crossing the plate. Up 3-0, Mobile’s Jarrin Best (3-5) forced a double play with two runners on in the third, then in the fourth kept a pair of Wolfpack runners stranded to keep Loyola off the board.

Best had a nice outing on the mound for Mobile, throwing eight innings, giving up seven hits while striking out two. John Ladnier came in to pitch the ninth to complete the shutout.

Travis Williamson led the Ram offense with three hits and two RBI including a solo home run in the fifth. Sanderson finished with three hits and a RBI while Beck had two hits and two RBI.

Carl Labit (1-3) took the loss, giving up two earned on three hits in 2.1 innings.

On offense for Loyola, McChesney, Templet, and Daigle finished with two hits each.

After Willamson’s homer in the fifth, Mobile used two singles to score two runs in the next frame. The Rams added three more in the seventh before splitting the doubleheader and taking the series 2-1.

Loyola is back in action next weekend with a three-game series in Jackson, Miss. against Tougaloo College. Friday’s first pitch is set for 6 P.M.
