MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team fell short in their comeback bid against the University of Mobile this afternoon, losing 3-7.
Matt Ditsworth (2-4) started on the mound for the Wolfpack and faced trouble in the second. The Rams led off with three straight doubles, scoring one. Mobile eventually produced another hit through the hole at shortstop to take an early 2-0 lead.
Lucas Wendt led off the top of the third with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt by Slade Sanders. Catcher Bradley Brunet followed with a single to shallow right-center field, advancing Wendt to third. Then Brandon Snow got a run back with a RBI double down the right field line.
The Rams extended their lead back to two in the bottom half of the frame, moving the score to 3-1. Ryan Waltman scored John Soutullo, who led off with a double to right-center, with a RBI single to left-center field.
The ‘Pack fought back with a run in the fifth. With runners on first and second with one out, Philip Cazayoux delivered a RBI single to shallow right, scoring the pinch runner Nevin Brown on second.
Down 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the ‘Pack retaliated once more. Sanders led off with a single to right and advanced to second on a Brunet bunt. Snow moved the runner to third after he singled to shallow left. With runners on the corners and one out, Cazayoux produced a RBI sacrifice fly to left, scoring Sanders and cutting the deficit to one.
After walking the first batter, Ditsworth retired the next hitter and was replaced by Trey Campeaux. Ditsworth picked up the loss after going 6.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on eight hits, and striking out two.
The Rams claimed three runs in the seventh off of Campeaux with doubles by Waltman and Parker Hollinghead. Parazine added a two RBI single, scoring Braxton Hamil and pinch runner Brady King.
The relief pitching by Mobile’s Josh Blaylock and Jacob Knowles denied the Wolfpack’s comeback bid as Loyola could not produce any more runs in the eighth or ninth, falling 3-7.
Campeaux pitched 1.2 innings and surrendered two earned runs on three hits. Mobile’s Michael King (3-3) earned the victory as he lasted seven innings and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits.
Both Brandon Snow and Evan Turkish finished 2-4 with Snow adding a RBI to his name. In addition, Cazayoux went 2-3 with two RBI’s and Brunet got two hits in three at-bats.
The Wolfpack drop to 11-16 overall, 1-12 in SSAC play, while the Rams move to 12-13, 6-6 in conference competition. Loyola and Mobile resume play tomorrow with a double-header starting at 1 p.m. CST.
