CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball squad dropped both games in today’s double-header against #3 Lee University at Olympic Field 15-0 and 7-3, as the Flames completed the three game sweep. The ‘Pack fall to 11-15, 1-11 in SSAC play, while Lee advances to 25-2-1 and remains perfect at 12-0 in conference competition.
In the series finale, the Wolfpack tried to stage a ninth inning rally but came up short. Down 7-0, the ‘Pack scored three runs with two outs before the Flames shut the door on Loyola.
In the frame, Karson Cullins and Evan Turkish singled through the hole at second. Then, Harold Toscano hit a RBI double down the right field line. Finally, Brien Delahoussaye smacked a two RBI single to left center.
Matthew Guerry (1-5) picked up the loss after giving up five earned runs on 13 hits over 7.1 innings. The sophomore walked three and struck out four on 145 total pitches. Jeffrey Castille relieved Guerry for the final 2/3 of the eighth inning, allowing one earned run on three hits. Vince Spilker (2-0) earned the win after going eight innings of scoreless baseball, giving up five hits.
Cullins finished game two 1-4 with one run scored. Turkish went 2-3 with one run scored, while Toscano went 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Delahoussaye finished 1-4 with two RBI’s. Finally, Lucas Wendt secured two hits in four at-bats.
George Smith (1-5) squared off against Lee’s Patrick Merkling (5-0) in game one. Merkling earned the victory after delivering five innings of one hit baseball, walking five and striking out 10. Smith picked up his fifth loss of the season after surrendering eight earned runs on ten hits over 3.1 innings. Michael Pfister pitched the remaining 2.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on four hits.
The Wolfpack return to action March 16 when they take on the University of Mobile in a three game at the UM baseball field on campus.
