NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team will kick-off their 2012 campaign tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. at Segnette Field. The Wolfpack will host Central Christian (Kansas) in a double header on Friday, followed by another double header on Saturday starting at 12:00 p.m.
Loyola head coach Gerald Cassard enters his fifth year at the helm of the Loyola baseball squad, as the Wolfpack enter into their second season of competing in the Southern States Athletic Conference. Last year, the squad finished 15-36 overall.
Coach Cassard will look for new leaders in the dugout this season after losing eight players who contributed to last year’s cause, including graduate Ryan Scott. Scott led the team with a .325 batting average and recorded 34 RBI’s. Cassard also seeks a new workhouse for his pitching staff after losing graduate Taylor Domengeaux, who the lead the team with 93.1 innings pitched.
The ‘Pack returns 21 players to the squad such as sophomore infielder Brandon Snow and senior pitcher George Smith. Last season, Snow hit .276 with one home-run and 14 RBI’s. Smith pitched 56 innings and tallied three wins, four complete games, and 39 strike-outs.
Cassard and company also welcome 11 newcomers who will don the Wolfpack uniform for the first time. The junior transfers consist of Harold Toscano, Anthony Asta, Matt Ditsworth, and Jared Belmonte. The freshmen class is made up of Brian Reaney II, Edward Dupont, Allen Newman, Nevin Brown, Ryan Laughlin, Joshua Leboeuf, and Dylan Roudolfich.
Central Christian finished 17-33 last season and competes in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference in the NAIA. This year’s squad squad is composed of 39 members, including a freshmen class of 26 men. Along with almost an entirely new look team, the Tigers welcome a new head coach to the fold in former assistant Aaron Childress.
