WESTWEGO, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team emerged victorious in both games of the doubleheader today, as they complete the sweep of Central Christian and move to 4-0. The Wolfpack took the first game 11-0 and then won the second by a score of 4-0.
Senior George Smith (1-0) was the M.V.P. of game one of the doubleheader. Smith pitched a complete game (seven innnings) and only allowed one hit on his way to picking up the victory. The dominating performance marked Smith’s best outing as a collegiate player.
Philip Cazayoux’s hot bat from Friday carried over into game one as the sophomore went 2-4 at the plate with one run scored and three RBI’s. However, not to be outdone, sophomore Karson Cullins went 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI’s.
Garrett Lacour, Anthony Asta, and Bradley Brunet produced solid offensive games as well. Lacour went 1-2 with one RBI, Asta went 1-3 with two runs scored, and Brunet had one hit on three at-bats with one RBI.
In game two, Loyola pitcher Matt Ditsworth (1-0) picked up right where George Smith left off. The junior pitched a complete game (seven innings), allowing just five hits. Ditsworth also recorded 11 strikeouts and only surrended two walks in the game.
The ‘Pack’s offense wasted no time scoring runs when Evan Turkish recorded the first Loyola home-run of the season in the bottom of the first, driving in Brandon Snow in the process. In addition, Lucas Wendt, who was the walk-off hero in game one on Friday, went 2-3 with one RBI, as the Wolfpack secured the 4-0 win along with the 4-0 start.
The Loyola baseball squad has one more doubleheader at home this Wednesday starting at 3 p.m. vs. Tougaloo, before starting an 11 game road trip.
