NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team (9-5, 1-2 SSAC) returns home to host Shorter University (10-5, 1-2 SSAC) in a three game set this weekend at Segnette Field. The Wolfpack and Hawks play a single game Friday at 6:00 p.m. followed by a double header on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
The ‘Pack are coming off a series loss to Belhaven in which they dropped two of three. Loyola returns home after eight straight road games. The 2012 Wolfpack squad boasts a 6-0 record at Segnette Field.
Shorter has played five games in the past week. Last weekend they went 1-2 against conference foe Southern Poly, and then swept Reinhardt in a two game set.
The Wolfpack are 0-3 lifetime against the Hawks, with the new conference rivalry starting last season in a sweep at Robert H. Ledbetter Baseball Complex in Rome, Georgia.
Loyola is currently ranked 22nd in the NAIA in total runs scored (86) and 28th in total runs batted in (71). Philip Cazayoux, Harold Toscano, and Evan Turkish have been the ‘Pack’s offensive leaders so far in the young season.
Cazayoux still leads the team with 11 RBI’s, 11 runs scored, and 15 total hits. Toscano is batting .367 with seven runs scored and eight RBI’s. Turkish is batting .283 and ranks 7th in the NAIA in total putouts (113).
Loyola is batting .286 compared to Shorter’s .309 average. In addition, the Wolfpack’s pitching staff has surrendered 40 earned runs on the season compared to the Hawks’ 42.
Willie Lewis leads the Hawks with a .479 batting average. Blake McCullers also paves the way with a team leading 15 RBI’s. Pitching wise, Ryan Newell (4-0) leads with a 1.50 ERA and 34 total strikeouts.
