WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team started the 2012 season with back to back wins in the double-header against Central Christian (Kan.) at Segnette Field. The Wolfpack took the first game in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 walk-off in the bottom of the tenth, then followed that with a 10-1 performance in the second game.
In the opening contest, Philip Cazayoux was 1-2 with three RBI’s. Down 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Cazayoux delivered a two run double in the bottom of the sixth that netted the game at four apiece. Greg Bellelo produced a solid outing as well, going 3-4 with two runs scored.
The ‘Pack had a chance to secure the win in the bottom of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings when they had runners in scoring positions with less than two outs, but waited until the bottom of the tenth when pinch-hitter Lucas Wendt drove a walk-off hit to shallow right field.
Jeffrey Castille started the game and lasted five innnings for the ‘Pack. Castille recorded three earned runs with four strikeouts. Trey Campeaux pitched 3.1 innings in relief and gave up one earned run on four hits. Finally, junior transer Anthony Asta (1-0) recorded the win after 1.2 innings of relief and surrending zero hits.
Wolfpack pitcher Matt Guerry (1-0) started the second game and pitched five effective innings for his squad. The sophomore pitched five innings, struck out seven, and did not allow a single run. Guerry gave up just four hits against 17 batters on his way to picking up his first win.
Cazayoux and Bellelo continued their hot hitting as the entire team exploded with a 10 run performance, including six in the sixth. Cazayoux went 3-5 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Bellelo went 3-3 with one run scored and two RBI’s.
Joining the duo on a solid second game from the plate was junior Evan Turkish and sophomore Garrett Lacour. Turkish recorded two hits on three at-bats with two runs scored and one RBI, as Lacour registered one RBI and two runs scored on one hit in two at-bats.
Loyola meets Central Christian in a second double-header tomorrow at 12 p.m. at Segnette Field.
