WESTWEGO, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team were swept by the #13 LSU-Shreveport Pilots on Sunday afternoon at Segnette Field, losing the series finale 9-2.
LSUS (35-9, 21-7 GCAC) took a commanding eight run lead after three innings and never looked back as they won the season series 5-1 against the ‘Pack.
Loyola (14-22, 11-19 GCAC) was led by Ryan Scott and Tyler Duplantis with two hits each. Scott and Duplantis had a good series at the plate for the Wolfpack, combining for 11 hits, four doubles, and four RBI.
Taylor Domengeaux (4-2) suffered the loss for Loyola. In two innings of work, he was charged with eight runs on six hits. Relievers Carl Labit, Eric Walsh, and Kevin Fontenot pitched well, giving up a run on five hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings.
For LSUS, Jared Mata (6-2) threw five innings for the win. He gave up two runs on seven hits. The Pilots’ bullpen was just as impressive, giving up only a hit in four innings.
LSUS was led by Chase Wentz, Shawn Moy, and Stephan Hobbins with two hits apiece. Hobbins drove in three runs while Moy and Kevin Smith finished with two RBI.
In the game, LSUS scored two runs each in the first two innings, then doubled the lead with four in the third. Hobbins, who hit a two-run homer in the second, capped off the scoring in the third with an RBI single.
Loyola plated their two runs in the fourth after Scott started the inning off with a double. The Wolfpack got their first run on a balk, then Lucas Wendt drove in a run on a groundout.
The Pilots added a run in the sixth before closing out the game for the win.
Loyola returns to action next weekend with a three-game set against Jesuit and GCAC rival Spring Hill College. Friday night’s opener is set for 6 P.M.
