(Central, SC) After winning 11-1 on Friday evening, Loyola University New Orleans completed the weekend sweep of Southern Wesleyan University by winning 4-2 in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader and winning 11-8 in game two. This is the third series sweep of the season for Loyola and the first against a conference opponent.
Game 1: Loyola 4 SWU 2
Loyola jumped out to a lead as they scored all four runs in the second inning of game one. Evan Turkish doubled to open the frame and Nevin Brown knocked him in with a single. Daniel Pappas singled, before Garrett Lacour had the big hit in the inning. Lacour tripled to score Brown and Pappas and then scored on a groundout by Brandon Snow.
Southern Wesleyan scored runs in the 3rd and 5th innings, but it wasn’t enough. Dany Diaz earned three walks on the day and scored both Warriors runs. Matt Arant and Floyd Thomas picked up the RBI’s with singles.
Joel Buhler (2-4) got the start for the Wolf Pack and earned the victory as he worked five innings, allowing six hits, two walks, and two runs, while striking out two. Daniel Posway earned his first save of the season as he pitched two innings while only allowing one hit and two walks and striking out three.
Matt Craig (4-3) pitched a complete game for Southern Wesleyan, only allowing four hits, a walk, four runs, three earned runs, while striking out four.
Loyola managed four hits in the game, all of them coming in the second inning to help the Wolf Pack build a 4-0 lead.
Thomas was 2 for 3 at the plate with a RBI. Arant, Michael Hyman, Julio Lara, Kendall Ray, and Clint Clymer each picked up a hit for the Warriors.
Game 2: Loyola 11 SWU 8
Loyola (12-33, 5-19) used a four run seventh inning to take a lead they wouldn’t surrender on their way to an 11-8 victory over Southern Wesleyan in game two of the doubleheader.
The Wolf Pack scored four runs in the second inning after both teams put two runs on the board in the first inning. However, the Warriors responded by scoring three runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 8-6 lead. Loyola trimmed the deficit to one in the sixth inning, before the four run seventh put Loyola ahead for good.
Snow went 2 for 4 at the plate for the Wolf Pack with a run and a RBI. Philip Cazayoux had two runs and a RBI, while cleanup hitter Carmelo LoSauro had two RBI’s. Evan Turkish had three hits in five at bats with a run and a RBI. Bradley Brunet knocked in a RBI as did pinch hitter Cameron Choquette. Lacour had two RBI’s and a run on a hit.
Lara, Hyman, and Arant each collected three hits for Southern Wesleyan (14-25, 6-15) in game two while Thomas went 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBI’s. Hyman had two runs while Lara had two RBI’s. Diaz went 2 for 4 with a run.
Jeffery Castille got the start for Loyola but allowed eight runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings. Jared Belmonte (2-2) earned the win as he pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing four hits and no runs. Michael Pfister allowed three walks in .1 of an inning. Conor Thurman earned his second save of the season as he pitched 2.2 innings only allowing four hits.
Tim O’Callaghan pitched two innings allowing six hits, six runs, four earned runs. Chase Mcelrath (2-7) picked up the loss as he allowed five hits, five runs, four earned runs in four innings. Clymer pitched the last three innings while only allowing two hits and a walk.
The Wolf Pack will return to the diamond on Friday, April 12th at 6:00 p.m. against Truett-McConnell for the first of a three game set against the Bears. Loyola will be honoring veterans and military personnel at Friday’s game. The team will then honor its seniors on Saturday as Tony Asta, Jared Belmonte, Bradley Brunet, Jeffrey Castille, Richard Dempsey, Justin Romaire, Evan Turkish, and Jake Weinstock will be playing their last home game.
