NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s cross country teams will open up their 2010 season by hosting the Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Invitational at Lafreniere Park on Sept. 11 in Metairie, La.
The college women kick off the event at 8 A.M. with the men to follow at 8:35 A.M. For the high school participants, the varsity girls start at 9:00 A.M. with the boys beginning at 9:35 A.M., and the junior varsity girls and boys start at 10:10 A.M. and 10:45 A.M. respectively. The awards ceremony will be at 11 A.M.
Around 300 runners will participate in the 2010 Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Invitational, doubling the number from last year’s event. Including Loyola, there will be eight college teams while 21 high school teams will run. All the races for the invitational are 5K.
Leading the way for the Loyola women is senior two-time all-conference runner Madeline Falcone. In 2009, Falcone had a season best 20:42 in the GCAC Championship. For the Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Invitational, she took 16th as the Loyola women captured the team title. Two freshmen, Elizabeth Gienger of Fairview, Texas and Vanessa Righeimer of Chicago, Ill., will be expected to make an immediate impact. Gienger and Righeimer have been shadowing Falcone on most of the practice runs so far.
The men’s squad includes returning sophomores Kenny Tsao and Alex Mayon. Tsao ran the 5K in a personal best 18:16 while Mayon was close behind with an 18:24. Freshman Abraham Thacker of Covington, La., has been tagging along side the two since joining the Wolfpack this off season. As a team, the ‘Pack look to improve their standing in the invitational after grabbing third in 2009.
The Radisson Hotel Wolfpack Invitational is the only home meet slated for Loyola this season.
