(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans men’s and women’s cross country teams hit the road as they travel to Hardeeville, South Carolina for their final regular season meet of the season at the Sand Shark Invitational on Saturday, October 26th at 8 a.m. eastern time.
The teams will have back to back race weekends for the first time this season after both squads competed at the Crimson Classic on October 18th. Francesca Vaccaro, Kennedi Henneberger, and Annie Hills led the women’s team by finishing 13 seconds apart. Paul Freese and Jonathan Malbrue paced the men’s squad as they both broke the 28 minute mark for the 8K race.
School records fell last year at the Sand Shark Invitational. Hills posted the top women’s 5K time in school history when she ran the course in 19:16. Vaccaro also made the school’s all-time top 10 list with a 19:55 time. On the men’s side, Freese placed fifth in the Loyola 8K record book with a mark of 26:37. Overall, six women (5K) and eight men (8K) posted season bests at last year’s Sand Shark Invitational.
The Wolf Pack will be competing against 29 women’s teams and 28 men’s squads. The competitors are Auburn Montgomery (M/W), Ave Maria (M/W), Belhaven (M/W), Bob Jones (M/W), Brenau (W), Brewton-Parker (M/W), Bryan (M/W), Columbia International (M/W), Dalton State (M/W), Embry-Riddle (M/W), Emmanuel (M/W), Georgetown College (M/W), Life (W), Milligan (M/W), Montreat (M/W), Morris (M/W), Palm Beach Atlantic (W), Palmetto Running Club (M/W), Point (M/W), Reinhardt (M/W), SCAD Savannah (M/W), Southeastern (M/W), Southern Wesleyan (M/W), Spartanburg Methodist (M/W), St. Andrews (M/W), Tennessee Wesleyan (M/W), Truett-McConnell (M/W), USC-Beaufort (M/W), Warner (M), Webber International (M/W).
“Our goal is to improve the gap time between our top five runners as well as our average team times. The Sand Shark Invitational will serve as a great indicator on how we stack up against our seven conference opponents who also will be at the meet,” said head coach Andy Canegitta.
