Loyola cross country/track adds three more to 2011 recruiting class

New Orleans, La.- Loyola University New Orleans head cross country and track coach Andy Canegitta announced the addition of three more student-athletes to the 2011-12 squad.

Mike Corso comes to Loyola from St. John Neumann High School in Florida. Corso sported personal bests of 16:58 in the 5k, 4:44 in the 1600 meters and 2:01 in the 800 meters. In cross country, he was a four year All-Area Honorable Mention by the Ft. Myers News Press, a three time All-Area Honorable Mention by the Naples Daily News. He has twelve top 25 times in St. John Neumann school history. Corso was a four time All-District selection and was the District runner up his senior season.

In track, Corso was the District Champion in the 800 meters. He was part of several successful relay teams in his career including the fifth best in the state in the 4 x 800m his sophomore season. He also was part of the seventh best 4 x 800 m his freshman year and seventh best 4 x 400m his junior season. He was Naples Daily News All Area Honorable Mention his junior season.

Moises Perez joins the Wolfpack from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. He has personal bests of 16:37 in the 5K, 10:03 in the 3200m, 4:38 in the 1600m and 2:01 in the 800m. Perez was part of the Florida State Champion 4 x 800 relay team. In 2009, Columbus won the Regional and State Team Championships. He was a national team qualifier for the Nike Cross Country Nationals in 2009 and first team All-Dade County in 2011.

Casey Shaw is a graduate of St. Pius X Catholic in Georgia. His personal bests include a 37:35 in the 10K, a 16:51 in the 5K and a 2:05 in the 800m. Shaw was an instrumental member of the St. Pius 2010 State Champion Cross Country team.

“An already talented incoming class grew stronger with the addition of Casey, Mike and Moises. They have the potential to be great student-athletes and will have an immediate impact to our track and cross country program. They bring championship experience, mental toughness, leadership, and will improve our team performance in the SSAC,” commented Canegitta.
