NEW ORLEANS, La. – Loyola University New Orleans cross country and track head coach Andy Canegitta announced the signing of Abraham Thacker from Covington, La.
Thacker, who was home schooled, is an avid runner participating in local road races. He placed 17th in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Mardi Gras marathon with a time of 2 hours and 49 minutes, beating the NAIA track and field qualifying time by one minute. In the New Orleans Jazz half marathon, he finished fourth with a time of 1:17 which was a minute shy of the NAIA qualifying mark. He also ran in the 10K Crescent City Classic where he took 55th with a 36:34.
“Abraham has tremendous talent, a huge upside, and will be one of our top runners this year,” said Coach Canegitta. “He will have the opportunity to train with a group (team) and receive coaching, which he has not had the privileged to experience yet. Considering all these factors, I expect big things from him.”
Thacker’s father was a 1975 NCAA Div. III All-American in cross country. His brother, Nathanael, graduated summa cum laude from Loyola this spring and participated in the cross country program in 2007.
Thacker had a 4.0 GPA and will study biology at Loyola.
