Loyola defeats cross-town rival Xavier in three sets

New Orleans, La. – Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team defeated cross-town rival Xavier University in three games, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-19 Wednesday night at The Barn.

Loyola (14-5) snapped Xavier’s 7-match win streak to remain undefeated in 10 matches in the series. The offense was led by junior middle blocker Sabrina Stansberry and freshman outside hitter Katie Hamilton who each notched 10 kills. Senior setter Samantha Worsham aided the attack with 26 assists. Hamilton and senior Kailey Tuthill both added two service aces on the night. Defensively, freshman Kaitlin Mohr and Lauren Brand had three blocks. Worsham recorded nine digs, while Tuthill and Hamilton added eight each.

Xavier dropped to 12-5 on the season and was led by Taylor Reuther who tabbed nine kills, while Moira Kirk notched six. Defensively, Kirk recorded four blocks on the night.

The Pack will travel to Franklin Springs, Ga. to face conference opponent Emmanuel College on Friday at 7pm. The Lions are 15-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play. Their attack is led by Riley Forester who has 245 kills and ranks 9th in the NAIA in total service aces (47). Brittany Woods ranks 3rd in hitting percentage (0.410). Their defense is led by Charmaine Kehoe who has 398 digs, while Woods has 66 recorded blocks.

Saturday afternoon Loyola is scheduled to play Southern Wesleyan in Central, South Carolina at 2pm. The Warriors are 15-8 overall and 6-3 in SSAC play. Amber Garrett leads the team with 201 kills and 63 blocks. Hayley Hoover assists the Warriors’ attack with 18 service aces and 623 assists.
